Hip Hop Recap 8.19.2019: Did We Come This Far For This?

So as life has it, I have been busy as hell the past few days. When I am moving in 100 directions, it’s nice to take a minute to sit down and reflect on the past few days.

Jay Z vs Everybody…except the NFL

How soon we forget the historic rise of an NYC rapper and how he called out the NFL machine over the treatment of Colin Kaepernick’s protest of police brutality. Jay’s stance on not performing at the Super Bowl provided a social movent muse to a whole generation of people. He was that rare breed of artist who rose from the concrete streets of Brooklyn to become a social activist for all…….. wait, hold up……..

Jay Z and his Rocnation imprint have just inked a deal to consult on all live performances done by the NFL. Wait there is more, it has just been reported that Jay Z will soon have a significant ownership interest in an NFL team.

You see there can be two takes to this:

1. Jay told you he was a hustler back in the day…..when he was in Marcy drinking those quarter waters.

2. Jay has an intricate plot to work from within the NFL organization to bring about change.

Well, believe what you want. I think that Jay does believe in social issues that affect our community, but I also feel that Jay is not a businessman, he is a business, man! And his business is making money and the opportunity to make money with the NFL was too much to turn down. After all, this is America!

New Album Drops

It’s been over a decade since we have had any new music from the NC based Hip Hop group Little Brother. Last year the two artists reunited for a performance at the Art of Cool festival. I guess that performance and crowd feedback planted the seed for an upcoming tour and new album.

Just recently announced is the release of their latest album at midnight (Tuesday, August 19 at 12 a.m.). The album title, May The Lord watch, will also feature a short documentary.
